About the Lighthouse Project

Recreating education for the
21st Century

The Lighthouse Project will be a beacon of light in the transformation of education for the 21st Century.  It will provide a Montessori education for children aged 0-18 years and connect with families and the community.

It will be a school of the 21st Century and beyond, that has at it's heart the needs of the child (and in turn society),
built on the foundations of a solid pedagogy laid down by Dr Maria Montessori.

Evolution of the Lighthouse project

The Lighthouse Project formed out of a deep desire to provide more children with access to an education model that truly puts them at the centre of learning and development.  An individualised, personalised model like no other.

Montessori East School has been operating successfully for nearly 40 years, and building on that success, came a need to broaden the programs offered to children and the families.

The Lighthouse Project will become a powerful catalyst for change, providing education with a humanist approach to strengthen communities as a whole and to assist in the creation of a better and more peaceful world.

The Lighthouse Project will provide an education hub that emphasises the interconnectedness of the child with the self, family, society and the wider world.

Project Scope

Community is the essence of Montessori East, and it will be at the heart of the Lighthouse Project.  In forming learning communities that engage home, school and society, we will reshape the traditional school model.

The project will include

  • a parent education and resource centre;
  • an early childhood centre for children under 3;
  • a 'children’s house' for 3-6 year olds;
  • a learning and discovery centre for 6-12 year olds;
  • an adolescent community for 12-15 year olds;
  • a higher education centre for 15-18 year olds;
  • Educator training and professional development will serve the needs
    of the entire education community as well as those serving in the Lighthouse project;
  • Community outreach programs will create a practicing community centre where
    service to the community becomes an outcome of learning and a positive preparation for life.

Education Philosophy & Pedagogy

The Lighthouse project is based on the well-established principles and practices of one of the most highly regarded education models on the planet developed by Dr Maria Montessori.   Today it is being recognised as a model for the needs of the 21st Century.

Montessori is one of the most widely implemented educational approaches in the world with over 22,000 schools in 117 countries. The methods and principles are applied to both home and school settings as the focus remains consistently on the child’s natural development.
